Sunda Kelapa

Sunda Kelapa is the name of some places and a port in Jakarta, Indonesia. This port is located in the village Networking, Penjaringan subdistrict, North Jakarta.
Although now Sunda Kelapa is just the name of one port in Jakarta, this area is very important because the villages around the port of Sunda Kelapa is a forerunner of Jakarta's anniversary is set on June 22, 1527. At that time Kalapa, his real name, is a royal port of Padjadjaran that is capitalized in Pakuan (now the city of Bogor) were captured by the troops of Demak and Cirebon. Although the new Jakarta's anniversary is set in the 16th century, the history of Sunda Kelapa had begun much earlier, ie at the time of Padjadjaran predecessor, the kingdom Tarumanagara. Tarumanagara kingdom had been attacked and conquered by the kingdom of Srivijaya from Sumatra.
Kalapa port has been known since the 12th century and at that time the most important port Padjadjaran. Then, during the advent of Islam and the European colonizers, Kalapa contested between the kingdoms of the archipelago and Europe. Dutch finally managed to hang long enough to more than 300 years. This conquerors rename Kalapa harbor and the surrounding area. But in the early 1970s, the ancient name Kalapa again used as the official name of this old port in the form of "Sunda Kelapa".

Eskspedisinya considered successful despite the high costs and Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC) was established. In search of spices in Southeast Asia, they require a base anyway. Then in the subsequent development on 30 May 1619, the Dutch seized Jayakarta under the leadership of Jan Pieterszoon Coen at once destroy it. On top of the rubble Jayakarta established a new city. J.P. Coen originally wanted to name the town Nieuw Hoorn (Hoorn New), according to his native town of Hoorn in the Netherlands, but was eventually chosen the name Batavia. This name is the name of a Celtic tribe that once lived in the territory of the Netherlands today in Roman times.

According to historical records, Sunda Kelapa port in the early days was built by a canal along 810 meters. In 1817, the Dutch government enlarged be 1,825 meters.    Around 1859, Sunda Kalapa is not as busy as ever before. Due to silting, the ships are no longer able to lean in close to the port so goods must be transported from the sea with boats. Batavia city when it is actually being accelerated and modern touches (modernization), especially since the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 that shorten the distance thanks to the ability steamships that more rate increases the current inter-oceanic shipping. Besides Batavia also compete with Singapore Raffles built around 1819.

He built the ocean port of Tanjung Priok, a distance of about 15 km to the east of the Sunda Kelapa to replace it. Almost simultaneously with the first railroad was built (1873) between Batavia - Buitenzorg (Bogor). Four years earlier (1869) appears drawn tram rode four horses, which were given iron in the mouth.
